‘Closing the gap’ between disadvantaged pupils sits at the heart of educational priorities in Wales. Alongside this, funding streams such as the Pupil Deprivation Grant and anti-poverty initiatives like Communities First, have been directing us to work with families and communities into our educational settings. Research has shown that levels of parental education influence a child’s attainment for example: family learning for children from disadvantaged groups increases their overall level of development by 15%. While developing this work is challenging it is beginning to show significant impacts. The Wales Centre for Equity in Education and NIACE Cymru would like to support the development of this work and are holding an inaugural meeting of a Forum for Family Learning/closing the gap. The purpose of the meeting is to explore the potential of such a forum, and identify key areas that would support family and community involvement in education. The meeting will be held on Thursday, 3rd December in Merthyr between 2pm-4.30pm. If you would like to attend please contact: kay.smith@niace.org.uk
